 The university persists in running the institution in accordance with the policy of "Emphasizing the education of undergraduates, being active in the development of the postgraduates' education, and devoting major efforts to developing scientific research", upholds the thought of "putting the education of students before everything else" and focuses on quality education in accordance with the requirements to train and bring up the students, so as to allow our students to be developed into those in possession of "Solid foundation, Wide knowledge, Strong competitiveness, and High quality". In addition, efforts will also be made to train and bring up senior qualified practical, universal and creative talents by means of deepening the reform of education and teaching, improving the education and teaching quality. By 2001, more than sixty thousand students have graduated from the university. Since 1999, the employment rate of graduates has remained above 95%, placed among the first few universities in Anhui Province, hence an advanced institution for graduate employment.

The university is active in the enforcement of the reform of teaching content and curricular system in the 21st century, and keeps regulating specialties, and remolds some old specialties, trying to widen disciplinary areas and increase some new specialties of inter-disciplinary subjects. Now, 32 majors are available, having disciplines of engineering, science, arts, medicine, management, which are coordinated and balanced programs of development.

On the one hand, the university deepens its reform of education system, and teaching and studying, on the other hand, it has made a lot of achievements in scientific research, which have produced good social and economic results.

In research years, the university has accomplished 35 state teaching study projects, winning 15 prizes for excellent teaching results; undertaken and accomplished 240 state projects listed as key tasks of science and technology for "the Ninth Five-Year Plan" and "the tenth-Five Year Plan", winning 62 of the National Second Prize for Progress in Science and Technology from the Province and the Ministry of Coal Industry, Special Prize for Progress in Science and Technology from the Province and the Ministry of Coal Industry; and it has set up 6 key disciplinary areas and two key laboratories of the Province.
