       With its distinctive characteristics and with its focus on engineering, Anhui University of Science and Technology (AUST) is a comprehensive and harmoniously developing key university of Anhui Province, consisting of disciplines in engineering, natural sciences, economics sciences, literature, medicine and management sciences. The multi-disciplinary university, with a history of nearly 60 years, was founded in 1945 as the first school of engineering in Anhui Province. It was originally under the auspice of the former state Department of Mining Industry. In July 1998, the university came to be co-sponsored by both the Central Government and the provincial government, and administered by the latter. It is now listed by Anhui Province as one of the five universities to attach great importance to in their development during the Tenth Five-Year Plan Period.

      Located in Huainan city of Anhui Province, a medium- sized city of energy in the country, the university covers an area of more than 1,400 mu, which is divided into three campuses complete with teaching facilities and abundant in educational resources. The floor area of constructions and buildings totals over 0.56 million square meters, featuring the newly-built bright and spacious teaching buildings, the advanced multi-purpose laboratory, the modern library, the 28-storey dormitory building for bachelors (the highest of its kind in East-China areas), and the 15-storey dormitory building for postgraduates. The library has a collection of over 0.92 million books. The SSreader, Wanfang, CNKI, springerLINK, EBSCO mirror sites are established, providing readers with access to more than 0.35 million kinds of e-books, 0.07 million excellent graduation thesis of bachelors and masters, and 0.012 million kinds of e-journals and e-magazines. The library functions as the service center of the Academic Library and Information System for northern Anhui Province. In the university, there are 32 research institutes, 56 laboratories, and many other modern teaching facilities such as the CAI Center, CAD center, EDA laboratory, an audio-video room, multi-media classroom, and a network and information center, offering the students a favorable learning condition. The university serves as a base for the cultivation of advanced personnel, scientific researches, and technological innovations for the province and its surrounding areas. Characterized with the environmental grace tranquility, the campuses are decorated with green trees and beautiful flowers, hence “A Flower Garden Campus” as honored by Anhui Province.

       In the university, there are 14 departments and schools. They are: Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Engineering, Resources Development and Management Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electric Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, Foreign Languages, Mathematics and Physics, Economic Management and Social Sciences, School of Medicines, and School of Advanced Professional Technology Education. Students of the university come from all corners of the country. One among the first couple of institutions of higher learning to offer bachelor and master degrees, the university is now authorized to offer doctorate, master, and bachelor degrees, as well as master degrees to the on-job candidates, and candidates with the same educational level. There are 41 bachelor degree programs, 18 master degree programs, 2 doctorate degree programs and 6 engineering master degree programs. The university includes 6 provincial key disciplines, 1 provincial key laboratory, 2 provincial key demonstration programs.

       The University is one of the large-scale institutions of higher learning in Anhui Province. At present, there are in the university 24,200 students, of whom 16,600 are bachelor students and 500 are master students, and 7,100 are adult students. There are 2,079 staff members working in the university, of which 1060 make up the teaching staff. Of the teaching staff, 400 are professors and associate professors, 120 are doctors, and 410, masters. An excellent academic group has been formed consisting of a number of state and provincial pioneering experts, discipline leaders, and young and middle-aged teachers.

      The university gives priority to discipline construction and devotes itself to teaching. It constantly enhances its awareness of quality in the process of the human-based education. During its long-term teaching practice, the university has formed its own educational characteristics, namely “emphasizing foundation, stressing practice, seeking innovation, and pursuing quality”. Bearing in mind the school motto of “unity and progress, strictness and standardization, erudition and sincerity, pragmatism and creativity”, students of the university are known for their all-round development of morality, intelligence and physique and are most welcome in the labor market. Since the establishment of the university, over 60,000 graduates entered the society, contributing a great deal to the country’s modernization drive and scientific and technological advancement. Most of them have become technicians of different specialties and management personnel.

       The university takes an active part in academic exchanges. It has established intercollegiate cooperative relations with America, Australia, Poland, Britain, Germany and other countries. Each year, it sends some of its faculty members to institutions of higher learning from other countries and regions such as American, Australia, Poland, Britain, Germany, Russia, Canada, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, and Hong Kong to visit, give lectures, pursue degrees, or engage in scientific and technological cooperation. Meanwhile, many prestigious people, such as academicians from the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, experts and scholars from prestigious universities both at home and abroad, are invited to visit, teach or give lectures. The exchanges and cooperation with related institutions of higher learning at home and abroad are constantly consolidated and promoted in fields of joint efforts in school administration, talents training, scientific research, academic activities and so on.

      Acknowledging that development is the primary task for the university, the new leading body will hold high the banner of the Deng Xiaoping Theory, and fully implement the great thought of the “Three Represents”, striving to turn the university into a higher-level one that will exert great influence on institutions of its kind in the country by deepening reform, pushing innovation, expediting development, and working assiduously.
